iii. sunny side up
Celestia's Point of View I averted my gaze from the guy, but my vision blurred whenever I looked at distant objects. When did my eyesight become like this? I was perfectly fine yesterday. "A-Ate! W-What did you just say? You must be catching your arrogant classmate’s attitude…!" I turned back to him, and he placed a pair of round glasses on my face. My vision immediately cleared, and I let out a sigh of relief. I thought I was going blind. "Where am I? I need to go home. Let’s end this prank already." "Ate, since when did you start talking like some rich snob?" he asked, his face scrunched in confusion. I shot him a glare. Seriously, this guy is so annoying. Mom really went out of her way to make every—wait… My hand shot up to my neck. "Hey'all…" No! My voice. This isn't my voice. My eyes darted around the room until I spotted a small mirror hanging on the wall. I rushed toward it, and my heart nearly stopped at the reflection staring back at me. This isn’t mine. This is hers. "That nerd! She’s a witch!" I shrieked, only to receive a smack on the shoulder. "Ate, what’s wrong with you? You are the nerd. Stop acting so freaked out over your own face—it’s creepy." I turned back to the guy, and now that I looked closely, he did resemble her. So that’s why he called me "Ate"… I-I’m in Renne’s body? Does that mean… she’s in mine right now? Our souls have switched. "Ate, enough with the acting. You’re not getting into that audition anyway." This is bad. I’m doomed. My plans aren’t just ruined—they’re over. This is a total disaster. "No… I’m not acting. Who do you think I am?" "My sister," he answered, unfazed. "No! Wrong. You’re wrong!" "Are we playing charades now? Am I supposed to guess which actress you’re pretending to be?" he asked, his voice innocent. "You don’t get it!" "Sorry, Ate, but I’m not as smart as you." His expression suddenly turned gloomy, making me sigh deeply. I met his eyes seriously and cleared my throat. "Do I look like your sister?" "Yes." The world has truly turned upside down. I’m stuck in this stupid nerd’s body, and I’m dealing with her clueless little brother. What did I ever do to deserve this? I’m the victim here! "No! Not my appearance. Do I act like your sister?" This time, he shook his head. I raised an eyebrow at him, and his eyes widened as realization dawned. That’s right. I’m not your sister. I’m Celestia Fontaverde. I just turned eighteen last month. "A-Are you saying… you’re not my sister?" I nodded. Finally. At least he’s not completely slow. --- Lifelessly, I stared at the wooden table, its surface full of small holes. I lost my life. My fame. My beauty. My goals. What about being top—oh, wait. Renne is the top student. But what about my luxurious life? My expensive food— Wait… at the mansion, I only ate what Mom allowed me to eat. Salads made of lettuce and flowers. A strict low-carb diet to maintain my perfect figure. But here, Mom isn’t here. I may be poor now, but I can eat anything I want. This… isn’t a disaster at all. Ruxe placed a plate in front of me, along with a spoon and fork. "So, you’re really Celestia Fontaverde in my sister’s body?" I nodded. "And you are Sairuxe Gomery? That nerd’s younger brother… I mean, my younger brother now." I scanned the table, my gaze landing on an unusual dish. It glistened with oil. "What’s that?" He sighed. "You’ve never had that before?" I shook my head. "It’s called sunny side up," he explained. "Sunny side up?" "Yeah. It’s a fried chicken egg." My eyebrows shot up. "Is it really possible to fry an egg like that?" I had never touched a single cooking tool or ingredient in my life. I had no idea how things worked in the kitchen—I only ate. I didn’t cook. "Do you want to try it, Miss Tia?" Ruxe asked. So, he’s a mind reader now? At least he’s not as selfish as his sister. "Call me Ate. I’ve never had a younger brother before, so call me Ate." "Alright, Ate." He took the plate with the sunny side up and placed it next to mine. I picked up a portion and placed it directly in my mouth. The flavor was new. For the first time… I didn’t want to go back to my old life. I didn’t care if I was Sairenne or whoever. Here, I was free. Free from my mother’s suffocating control. "This is good," I muttered, glancing at Ruxe with a smile. "If you really are Miss Celestia… my definition of ‘Ate’ doesn’t match you at all. But then again, my sister doesn’t scream ‘Ouch!’ every time I hit her on the shoulder." I never realized that this kind of life could be enjoyable too. It’s not that I’ve adjusted—I just get to eat whatever I want. No strict diet. No maids watching over me like prison guards. I didn’t have to wish for Dad’s presence just to escape from Mom. But how did this even happen? How did our bodies and lives switch? A magical phenomenon like this is strange in the modern world. If that nerd ever wants to return… will I really have to go back to my nightmare? "By the way, what grade are you in, Ruxe?" He shook his head. "I don’t go to school. I stopped in eighth grade, three years ago, because our mom got sick." "Is that so? What about Renne? What is her life like?" Not that I was interested in that nerd. I just needed to know so I wouldn’t blow my cover.
