Rich People

“Alwin! Serve this to table four,” our head manager, Paulo, immediately orders me when I just come out from the dressing room. I don’t know why he’s also serving even though his job is only to walk around and observe the employees performance and how they accommodate their customers, as a head manager of the restaurant.
I walk up to him and take the tray he’s carrying from him that contains three plates of pork steak, three plates of vegetable salad, three plates of mocha cake, and three glasses of mango juice. Wow! The people who ordered this must be very rich!
I directly go to table four to serve the order. I gently put their orders one by one on top of their table. “Here is your order! Please, enjoy your dinner!” I cheerfully say.
That is what we always say to our customers every time we serve their orders because that is what our head manager taught us when we were just trained as a waiter. That is also a protocol of the restaurant aside from wearing a blue uniform.
I just stand in front of their table while my both hands are in my front and wait for their signal to send me away from their table.
I glance at the married couple that are sitting on the left side of the table and I can see how the old man looks at their son that is sitting in front of them with a menacing look while the old lady is holding herself back from looking at their son. While the son is just sitting on his spot like he isn’t affected by his father’s glare on him at all.
My forehead creases but I immediately replace it with a smile so they won’t notice that I am observing their actions. “Call me when you need anything else, ma’am, sir,” I say while bowing my head at them. I don’t want to stand there any longer as I can feel the tension building between the father and son. I might get involved with their problems if I stay.
I was gonna walk away to attend the other customers when the son stops me. “Wait! Hold up. Can you sum up my orders?” He points at the dishes on top of their table.
I nod my head and write the total amount of their order on the paper I’ve been holding then hand it to him. He looks at it without any emotions whatsoever written on his face before pulling out a wallet from his suit pocket. He places down a ten thousand baht on top of the table before looking at me sharply. “Keep the change,” he coldly says to me before he stand up and walks out of the restaurant.
What the hell is wrong with him?! Did he really have to look at me like I have said something that offended him? He asked for the total amount of the order so I sum it up for him, that’s it! Vexatious asshole! Son of a bitch!
My gaze follows him through the glass window of the restaurant until he finally enters his very expensive black Porsche car and zooms out of the empty highway like he owns it. Come to think of it, his car looks really the same as the car that speeds off on me a while ago but I didn’t think much about it because every car looks the same to me.
From what I’ve seen from the guy’s behavior, he’s obviously mad so does his father that is now fisting his hands while glaring at the pork steak in front of him. Okay, old man, the pork is already cooked. No need to bore it with your crinkly eyes.
I sigh and pick up the ten thousand baht that the guy had put on top of the table then bow at the couple again before finally walking away from them. I’m afraid he would kill me with his raging eyes if he realizes that the pork won’t die again as it is already dead.
I always see that scene from the rich families. They don’t understand each other and are very self-conceited. They love their money more than their own family. They would look at the poor with disgust in their eyes and very pretentious towards their own social circle of friends. They will do anything just for the sake of money.
The only similarities both rich and poor have is the desire of having a lot of money but in a very different reason. Rich desires to have a lot of money for their luxury that isn’t really needed for their everyday lives while poor desires to have a lot of money for their everyday needs and so they can eat meals three times a day.
I head towards the counter to wait for a customer. I look at the couple and see how the woman tries to calm his husband down. She is whispering something to his ear while caressing his arm. The man nods his head before they stand up and walk out of the restaurant. They didn’t even tasted the food they had ordered. I feel pity for the chefs who spent a lot of effort just to attain the desired taste of the customers but they’ll just stare at it and leave it untouched.
I raise a brow when Paulo approaches me with creased forehead. “What happened to those customers?” He’s referring to the couple that has just drive away and didn’t even try to taste the food.
I shrug my shoulders. “I don’t know. When I gave them their orders, they were already like that. Probably having some problems with their son. He’s acting like a douche too and then left his parents,” I say.
Paulo shakes his head at what I had said. “Rich people and their obnoxious behaviors, really...” he weakly says so that the customers won’t hear him.
I chuckle at what he said and nod my head. “Right...”
