Cheska blinked a few times. Maybe it was just her mind playing tricks on her. Maybe she just thought the man looked like Doc Darryl, at first glance. There were instances like that, like at first you thought two persons looked the same but as you looked closely, they were really not. Or maybe she just lacked sleep. She was too excited to even have a few minutes' sleep on the plane.
She once again took a secret glance at the man who was talking to a woman he was with. She still hasn’t changed her mind about him. The man just looked a little bit mature. He has his short hair brushed up. And his body was built a bit broader. His skin tone was lighter compared to the paler complexion of the Koreans around them. He still has that tanned skin color.
Cheska opened her cellphone and stared at the picture on her wallpaper. Her hand was shaking as she took a look at the man once again. The man really looked like Doc Darryl.
Maybe Doc Darryl was letting her remember him, that’s why she thought she was seeing him in that man. She glanced at the man with longing. She wanted to touch him. She wanted to see if he was real.
There was just something in that man, but he is not Doc Darryl. He is on Jeju Island. He is dead.
"Min Ho Oppa!" screams coming from a group of chaotic women behind her.
Cheska felt someone bump into her. Then the train stopped and since she was a little distracted, she lost her balance. But the man was quick and caught her before she fell on the floor.
"Are you okay?"
That voice.
She could clearly hear his voice now. And it wasn’t the voice she was expecting from Doc Darryl. It was deeper. Manlier. Livelier. She could even feel the warmth emanating from him. He was alive and a faint scent of fresh soap wafted her senses. She could still feel his warmth even when he already let her go. Cheska didn’t notice that her cellphone slipped from her hand and landed on the floor. But she didn't care. She was just staring at a man who looked like Doc Darryl. Like Darryl was alive in front of her.
"Your phone."
Only then did she notice that her phone was broken and its screen had cracks. Her phone was dead. Her broken phone should have bothered her. She could no longer see Doc Darryl on the screen. But the man next to her was still clearly very much alive.
“Yaaaa! Yeogie yuhog jungji,” he scolded the youngsters.
"Mianhamnida," the teenagers bowed as an apology. Then they scrambled out of the train.
The man picked up her cellphone. Cheska’s hand was still trembling when she took her phone from him. She felt the warmth from his hand. He was alive. And this was her reality now. She couldn’t hear anything else. She no longer understood anything. She had her full attention on Doc Darryl. Darryl was here in front of her now. All the emotions she kept inside her over the years - the longing, the love, and the desire to see and talk to him.
"Doc Darryl!" She hugged it and burst into tears. "Doc Darryl!"
She embraced him just like she had told him she would do the moment they meet. For a long time, she felt like she was just alone and sad. She was laughing but it doesn't reach her heart. There were people around but no one could touch her heart. She was inside this invisible glass case. But in “Doc Darryl’s” arms, the glass started to shatter. As if something warm touched her heart. She was starting to feel… happy again. Deeper than whenever she just thinks of Doc Darryl or when she watches a telenovela she could relate to.
Tangible. That was probably what Micah would call how she was feeling. As tangible as the man she had in her arms right now. She had a lot of things to say to Doc Darryl. She even wrote a letter about it. But nothing else came out of her mouth except calling his name over and over again. And even if the world continues to move around them, she prefers to stay this way with him. She was happy as long as he would never disappear from her sight.
An older woman he was with slapped his arm. “What did you do to her?”
"Nothing. Her phone was broken so maybe that’s the reason…”
She still didn’t let him go until he let her sit next to the woman he was with. He then gave her bottled water. "I eumlyo."
