II Nadia focused her gaze at her reflection, as she neatly styled her hair on a whole half braid. She kept checking on both her clothes and appearance as she consciously analyze her posture. Despite the heavy rain pouring outside, Nadia still to at least look presentable. It's not that she's ugly that she needed to appear pleasant, if it isn't really much of a bragging, Nadia is beautiful. Long wavy black hair that cascades down to her hip, fair skin, heart shaped face with moles as her beauty mark--one placed at the under side her left eye while the other is at the under left side of her lip, and especially a healthy body. But what brings out her beauty most is her silver white colored eyes that almost resembles the shiny white pearls and transparent diamonds. Though these eyes were far from ordinary, she still loved it as it was her mother's eyes too. All thanks to her parents genes that made her, though all she knows is her mother. Given that ever since she was born, her father had already been out of the picture. All she has is her mother’s word that he died long before she was born. Sometimes she wonders if death is really the whole truth. She's already preparing to leave for the hospital, to visit her bedridden grandmother. Nadia checked her wristwatch, and when she saw that it was already past 10:30 am, she took a last glance of herself before she went at her mother's altar. "I'll be visiting grandma today, mama." She said as she laid out another fresh fruits to replace the old and now rotting ones. She turned her heels as she grabbed her sling bag and umbrella before she started heading outside, but before she could completely went out, Nadia sighed deeply. The moment she stepped outside, the smell of wet cement and soil tickled her nose. The rain poured as if the skies were crying. She opened up her umbrella and walked, despite the heavy rain, there were still many people walking outside but she ignored them and minded her own. Besides, it's not like they would give a damn about a woman minding her own business, everybody has their own little world. So as she. When she saw a cab passing, she immediately hailed it. The cab stopped in front of her so she quickly hopped in and closed her umbrella as she put it beside the cab door before she said her destination. "To St. Theresa Hospital please." She said, her gaze locked outside the window. The cab started moving, passing each people and buildings on the road. She blankly watched as the raindrops trailed at the window, the rain still pouring harshly as they drove fast by the tall buildings and trees. Thankfully, the driver doesn't seem the type to randomly open an conversations with their passengers so she doesn't needed to talk or turn to him. The whole ride was smooth and peaceful, no one talked, no random occurrence. Just her, the driver, and the radio playing a soft 90's music. "We're here now, ma'am." The driver said. When she look at the other side of the window, she saw the huge tall hospital building, broading before them. She searched her bag for her wallet and when she found it, she took out a payment and gave it at the driver as she muttered him 'thank you'. She grabbed her umbrella as she opened the cab's door and opened it before she stepped out. She heard the cab leaving as she walked away, her heels clicked at the wet tiles of the hospital's premises as she walked up the four steps stairs. The motion detecting doors instantly opened when Nadia stepped in front, she closed her umbrella and wiggled it near the indoor plants by the doors to shake off the rain water from it. After that, she turned her sight ahead. But the moment she did, she immediately sighed tiredly. The moment she turned, the crimson red writings immediately greeted her. Not just one, but numerous of them, she was bombarded by the deaths of every people inside. One thing that she hated the most is going to hospitals, since it was a place where death resides. But unfortunately, her grandma's in here too so she really don't have any say on this. It's just deeply ironic, usually, people perceive hospitals as the place where they can have a chance to prolong life by being saved. The living called this place a sanctuary. To Nadia, it was nothing but a morgue with better lighting. She clicked her tongue as she continued walking towards the front desk. "Good morning ma'am, is there something I could help you with?" A front desk nurse asked smiling when she noticed Nadia. "I'm here to visit the patient in room 204." Nadia flatly answered as she gazed at the nurse, even though the crimson writing above the nurse's head urge her to look, she still kept focused ahead. Not above. The nurse subtly nodded as she took out a log book and opened it before handing both the book and pen to her. "Please sign here ma'am." Nadia clicked the pen and wrote her name and time of visit, the pen hovered at the paper as it made a faint scratching sound. After writing, Nadia closed the log book and returned it at the nurse and started walking after. She ventured the long hallway, walking passed by every patients. The bright crimson colors started to hurt her eyes the more it broads before her, but all she can do now is endure it and act like it was nothing. When she saw an elevator opened, she quickly went towards there and went in. There she was greeted by a male nurse and an elderly woman sitting at the wheelchair that is held by the nurse. And for once, her eyes betrayed her again. 04-24-XX | 11:21 nn Heart Attack She breathed sharply as she quickly averted her gaze away, thankfully, the elevator opened at the second floor where her grandma's room is. She quickly walked out and walked in fast pace, roaming her eyes at every room number, until she had finally found the room 204. Before opening the door, she took out her compact mirror out of her bag and checked her appearance. She fixed her hair and dusted her clothes before putting the mirror back inside and slowly grabbed the knob as she twisted it open. "Grandma I'm here..." Nadia greeted with a small smile. Her grandma turned to her and smiled warmly. "You're finally here, I hope the ride is smooth on your way." Nadia lowly chuckled as she pulled a chair towards near her grandma's bed and sat down. "Thankfully it was, by the way I brought you your favorite fruit." She stated as she took out a plastic out of her bag. Inside are three big oranges, its peel are bright and you can tell that it's all fresh. She took one out as she set the rest aside by the bedside table, she started peeling the one on her hand and took one as she handed it to her grandma. the smell of citrus breaking through the sterile hospital air, it was both sweet and fragrant. "Mmm, it's sweet. Where did you brought it dear?" Her grandma said as she ate the orange happily. Nadia smiled and continued breaking each pieces apart and handed it to her grandma. "I brought it this morning from the farm market near the subdivision, heard it was sweet and freshly picked from the farm so I ended up buying some." Her grandma kept chatting on her, asking questions regarding about her school, studies, well being and daily life. Nadia answered every questions with smile and ease, she knows that whenever her grandma hear that she's doing well, smile stretched more on her lips. As if Nadia's well being and happiness is her happiness as well. But whenever Nadia glances at her grandma, she felt her heart being tightly gripped as she can vividly see the crimson writing above her head. O6-29-XX | 11:59 pm Tuberculosis She wanted to scream--she always does, just to rip the crimson letters out of existence, but all she could do was smile and hand her another slice. That's what all she can do anyways. She bit her inner cheeks as her hand tightly gripped the remaining slice of orange on her hand, she stared more firmly at her grandma's appearance. Right now her grandma's state is really pitiful, she's both pale and thin as if she hadn't been eating well. Wrinkles and dark circles started to appear at her face, she really did look someone who's in the verge of dying. Nadia immediately shook her head, whisking off the negative thoughts out of her mind. It was supposed to be a happy day, why the hell is she thinking such negativity? "How are you these days, grandma?" She asked, changing the topic. "Oh you don't need to worry about me, I've been fine--" Her grandma's words were cut off when suddenly, series of relentless coughing escaped her mouth. Nadia went alert as she saw her grandma having a hard time, she immediately stood up and went beside her to help her. Her grandmother’s frail hands trembled, clutching the sheets as each cough rattled through her thin chest, the sound scraping the sterile quiet of the room. "Grandma! Are you alright?! What's happening?!" She asked, panic sipping from her tone. But instead of words, blood came out of her grandma's mouth. Her panic suddenly turned into fear as she felt her entire body ran cold. Her lips slightly parted as she felt both of her knees started to weaken, but before she could even succumb to weakness, she forced herself to pull her mind altogether as she hurriedly pushed the red button on top of her grandma's bed. She kept pushing the button again and again as if her desperation controlled her body completely. And finally, after the restless pushing of the button, nurses and doctors had finally arrived inside the room. "H-Help! Please! My grandma s-she--" "Don't worry ma'am, we'll take care of her. But first we need you to stay a little further first, we needed to ensure both yours and the patient's safety." The doctor said as he tried to guide her to take a few steps away from her grandma. Nadia nodded as she took a steps back and let the professionals do their job, but despite witnessing her grandma being taken care of, the way her fear and body trembles still hadn't subsided yet. The fear of losing her grandma wouldn't just disappear as long as she still don't see her being well. Her gaze betrayed her, dragging upward. There it was, seared into the air above her grandmother’s frail body. Crimson letters burned with a brilliance that mocked her, that told her this was inevitable. Nadia bit down on her lip until copper filled her mouth, but the taste of blood did nothing to drown out the truth staring back at her. Not today… but soon. Too soon. Every reminder was a knife twisting deeper. After hours passed, her grandma had gradually became well. Her coughing stopped as her breathing came back to normal, yet her paleness and swollen eyes still remained. The doctor called her outside for a talk, and when they went out, he straightly told her that her grandma's condition had worsened. She wasn't shock or anything, she knew that it will come to this anyway, she had already foreseen this. But she felt defeated and hopeless for the fact that it still did happen, despite her silent wishes of her grandma escaping such fate. When the nurses and doctors left, Nadia stood near the door quietly. Silence and dread cloaked the whole room. "Nadia..." Nadia raised her head and looked at her grandma. "Yes grandma?" "Come here, dear..." She hesitated at first but slowly, she moved her feet, walking towards her grandma. As she stopped beside the bed, her grandma took her hand and gently squeezed it. "It must have been scary, I'm sorry you needed to see that." Her grandma said weakly as small smile crept to her lips, consoling Nadia. She opened her mouth but shut it instantly, she wanted to bring up the topic of saving her grandma by intervening with fate. But she knows well that her grandma's answer will still be firm and as it is. And besides, arguing would only be bad for her health so she better just shut up. Her throat ached with the words she wanted to say — the pleas, the desperate bargains — but she swallowed them down like poison, because she knew her grandmother would never accept them. She will never. All this time, her grandma's wishes is for her to be happy and to not intervene with something that will cost her heavily. Nadia spent half the day by her grandmother’s side, the warm and comfortable mood from earlier had been replaced by the heaviness. But she didn't let it effect the mood between her and her grandma. They talk and giggled despite the dread of the atmosphere. They laughed, but the laughter sounded fragile, like glass that could shatter at any moment. Until, night has come. Her grandma told her that they should call it a day and that she should go home now before the rain poured once more. Nadia agreed and started cleaning up before she bid her grandma goodbye and left. But before she left, she turned to her for the last time. "I'll call later, okay?" Her tone a little too soft, as though she was reassuring herself more than her grandma Her grandma only smiled and waved a goodbye. But it felt wrong. She shook her head and continued on her way. As she finally outside the hospital, a cab stopped in front of her and she hopped in. Thankfully, the rain had stopped pouring earlier but basing on the cold wind and smell of rain starting to get stronger, it will pour again. "To Harmony subdivision." On the whole ride she was preoccupied by her thoughts, she mindlessly stared outside the window and sighed tiredly. But on her silence, something clawed her from within that made her felt uneasy. As if something's telling her that she should comeback and stay by her grandma's side. That the farewell smile and wave that she made is the last thing and time that she'll see it. That it will be the last time that she'll see her grandma. Nadia immediately shook her thoughts off, she scolded and cursed herself on such thought. She clenched her fists in her lap, as though squeezing the doubt out of herself. Nonsense, there's still months left before death will arrive for her grandma. What the hell is she thinking? The way she thought those things are no different from her thinking that her grandma will pass more earlier than it was supposed to be. What a granddaughter is she. Besides, nothing really bad will happen. ......right?
