Chapter 16 Trap Door

Celine learned that Drake is scared to be alone at night in a room. It all began when he was just ten years old. That means that it happened during this year when they are. He told her that he was able to witness the murder of his parents. The culprit hid inside his room.
From then on, he can't sleep alone in a room. He spent his childhood after that incident in an orphanage. At least there, he doesn't have to sleep alone. But when he's older, he normally sleeps inside the lab. Since he's a child prodigy, he already has access to the lab of his mentor.
That's why he got obsessed with traveling in time. He wants to prevent it from happening. But not right now since the time travel device is not perfect yet. If he did something to change the past, that might have a different effect on the future. But he plans to go back once the device is already perfect.
Celine can't help but feel bad about Drake's past. He's doing the impossible for his parents. While she only thinks about her dead boyfriend. Although they both want to save their loved ones from their deaths. She suddenly feels guilty about being mean about sharing the room with Drake.
"Let's use the master's bedroom instead. At least we can sleep on a king-size bed there." Celine suggested.
"Alright, but let's lock the doors of the other rooms. There are a lot of bad people out there during this time." Drake suggested.
That's what they did before moving to the master's bedroom. Drake checks the main and back door as well. He's very paranoid because of what he has experienced. Well, if she also experienced the same thing, she might go crazy. It's not a good memory to have.
Celine decided to go to the kitchen now that she doesn't feel tired anymore. They can eat an early dinner instead so that they can sleep after. The house looks nice but she noticed an odd-looking doormat near the kitchen door. It looks very out of place from the house interior.
She takes a closer look and it seems that it's covering something. Curiously, she lifted the doormat and she saw a trap door under it. She tried to open it through its round handle. It popped open and made a creaking sound as she opened it all the way.
It's too dark to make out of something so she tries to find a flashlight from the kitchen drawers. Luckily, she found a small flashlight under the sink. It looks like it's placed there if someone opens the trapdoor. She quickly goes back to the opening and sees a staircase.
She thinks for a moment if she will go down to check it out. But she decided to call Drake and tell him about it. He might get worried if she just disappears after they talk about his past. She's also afraid of what she might find out under that door. But she's only thinking about the possibility of rats living inside.
"Drake! Come here, please!" She called out.
She doesn't want to close the trap door anymore or leave it open to get Drake. He needs to see it since they will be living in this house for a few months. That is if Chad wasn't able to pick them up. They need to prepare for plan B so they can go back to their time.
"What is it?" Drake asked and looked surprised to see the trap door.
"I found it under the doormat. Should we check it?" She asked.
"Yeah, I guess we can go down to check." Drake agreed.
"Alright, you go first!" She suggested.
Drake looks at her for a few seconds as if thinking about her suggestion. Then he takes the flashlight from her and enters the secret door. She waited for him to call her and he did so she followed him under that trap door.
"Whoa!" She exclaimed the moment she saw what's behind that door.
"It's pretty nice huh?" Drake asked rhetorically.
It looks like another room under the house. The best part is, it looks well maintained. There are no cobwebs or too much dust around. It has a long table with matching long benches on each side. It looks like a dozen people can fit to sit there for dinner. The room is also surrounded by empty shelves.
When they walk around it, there's a latch above that connects to the backyard. They both think about one thing. It's a perfect place for their temporary lab. They can work on the charging rod for the devices so that they can take the electricity from the lightning strike.
"I guess we got ourselves a new lab!" Drake announced.
"Yeah, I never thought that a normal-looking house would have something like this under it." She commented.
"Well, we can take advantage of this room underground. We can't let anyone know what we are about to do around here." Drake said looking excited.
"What if Chad wasn't able to open a new wormhole?" She asked.
"Then, we will create our new wormhole from here! It's the perfect place where we can do it." Drake replied.
He looks so confident about it that made her feel the same way. After all, he's a genius and the first scientist who was able to create a wormhole for time travel. But the Time Travel Agency closed it as if it's nothing important.
If they can create it from the past, they will never know about it since the first wormhole Drake created is from the future. Now she's getting the hang of being an assistant scientist. She's thinking like Drake already after just a few days of working with him.
"We need to buy some supplies to get started. Maybe we don't need to wait for the lightning storm after all!" Drake told her.
"What do you mean we don't have to wait? I thought we needed a lightning storm to charge the devices?" She asked.
"We're going to create one so we can go home!" Drake replied.
