Chapter 4 LITTLE CHANGES

The writer wasn't exaggerating when he said she had gone through an exhausting make-over session.
Alice sat in her robe facing the mirror, waiting for the hair stylist to do whatever she wanted with her hair.
She couldn't help but feel angry anytime she glanced at the horrible peach gown that was hanging on a rack. That was what she was supposed to wear today, to a ceremony that included all the high dignitaries and A-list citizens of the society.
No wonder Alice ended up falling over the cake. In the book, The character Alice had viewed the efforts put in her make-over as a sign of her parents love and thought it would be rude and ungrateful of her to reject the dress they offered and end up embarrassing the family, so with a big smile and thousands of Thank you's she accepted the huge dress, donning it on herself and effortlessly looking like the clown the maids had intended. It was very difficult to walk properly in the dress because it was huge and too long for her and she was also very nervous with no shoulder to lean on. Yearning for a supporting figure, she chose to talk to her sister Bethany and while trying to get to where she was, which was no easy task as the birthday girl was always surrounded by lots people, she stepped on the dress and ended up in the cake.
Alice shivered from the second-hand embarrassment she had felt when she read it. She couldn't be in such a situation, she would never be able to recover.
'Was the plot rigid? Was there no room for adjustments.' she asked herself.
'No it wasn't, they had replied to her questions earlier, though the character Alice had never asked those and the character Alice had brown eyes while she, the Alice presently sitting down waiting to be dressed up had grey eyes, just like herself in real life.'
If this was her new life, then she wouldn't live it like she did her former neither would she live it like the character Alice. Gathering every ounce of courage she had, she turned around and looked at Miss Sarah then asked as authoritatively as she could with one eyebrow raised."
"I hope that isn't what I'm wearing."
Miss Sarah stopped to face her, her eyes holding disbelief, she let out a sigh and controlled herself, before she replied.
"Don't you like it ma'am"
Her tone annoyed Alice, she was boldly daring her to reject the dress. Alice could feel her temper rising and her caution slipping, if she wanted a life like she always dreamed off, A life that was in her control, a life worth living, she had to make the decision now. Either to cower in fear and live a pathetic life or break out of her comfort zone, tell the woman off and live her dream life.
"Do you?" She asked sarcastically.
"Well, you can have it. As for me I'll only wear something I choose." She concluded her statement looking straight into her eyes.
Miss Sarah looked like she could explode at any moment and Alice despite herself almost burst out laughing.
'It feels sooo good. So, so good.' Alice thought.
One of the maids hurriedly ran to Miss Sarah and dragged her with her, carrying the dress on her way.
Alice smirked as she realized who that was. Ruth the Nasty right hand maids to Bethany.
Internally, she Thanked God for allowing her witness that, now she will think twice before she tries anything with her.
The hair stylist arrived and Alice found herself adjusting to the woman. In the book, the writer hadn't bothered to expatiate on the woman, so Alice was truly surprised when the woman seemed nice. She engaged Alice and even complemented her sense of style. By the time they were done, miss Sarah and her minions were back with 5 racks of clothes.
Alice was eager to see the dresses, but she held it In until the hair stylist whose name was Maria told her she was done. Alice watched her reflection in the mirror.
"You did an amazing job." Alice squealed. Her hair was in an elegant up do with the back in a beautiful mess and the front framed with beautiful tresses. Her curly brown hair was extremely difficult to tame, so she didn't have any high expectations but what she is looking at right now is pure art it gave her an inspiration for the outfit she should wear today.
Without any warning, she stood up and went to the racks hoping she could find something close to her imaginations.
Going carefully through the clothes, she stopped on the third rack, her eyes transfixed on the white Jumpsuit on the first end of the rack.
"Perfect." she whispered.
"I think so too." Maria chimed in from behind her.
"You like it too right?" Alice asked.
"I love it."she replied. Giddily, Alice picked the cloth out of the rack and placed it against her body, twirled around totally ignoring Miss Sarah's look of disgust.
"You may all leave, I and Maria will do the rest."
Alice ordered them out, dragging Maria to assist her in choosing befitting accessories.
30 minutes later and they were done.
"Your elegance will fill the room dear, you look jaw dropping"Maria clapped her hands,a bright smile illuminating her face.
Alice felt confident in her outfit, it was a white racer back crepe jumpsuit paired with a slim silver belt and round silver earrings. She paired it with a simple golden bracelet and a golden stilettoes. Thank God for her love for fashion, one of her hobbies was trying out the shoes when she goes out to shop for the office requirements or when she's alone in their dressing room. Finally her talent was being of use now.
As if on cue, a knock resonated through the room and the person behind the door spoke.
"Darling are you ready?"
Alice bit her tongue to keep her nervousness at bay, all the courage and the excitement she once felt had dissipated on hearing this voice, she was sure it was Mrs Emma White, her mother in this world.
Quoting exactly what the writer had said about her "Bold and Beautiful, she commanded the spotlight."
In the book, when she had seen Alice in the dress, she hadn't bothered to tell her to change, she just raked her eyes from head to toe and told her to walk ahead.Naive Alice didn't see anything wrong and she obediently walked ahead leaving behind a disappointed Emily.
Alice looked at herself in the mirror, she looked nothing like Naive Alice,Mrs Emma wouldn't be ashamed of her, rather she would hold her hands proudly and introduce her.
"I am." She answered, bracing herself to meet her fictional mother. As she began to walk to the door, she felt Maria's reluctant hand on her shoulder and she turned to look at her.
'No matter what, I'll have your back' were the words her eyes spoke.Alice smiled at her and whispered.
"Thank you."
Mariah was just the hair stylist in the book, there was no mention of her name or description of her personality. In the book she wore the horrible peach dress, in the book she allowed miss Sarah and her minions bully her, in the book she was a helpless dog seeking the attention of her family, in the book she was just a naive country girl with little education, but now, she vowed to make changes, no matter how little, just like the way she had changed Maria from just a prop to a full character by going out of her comfort zone, it proved the plot was flexible. She would use her knowledge of the plot and her amazing educational background to change her destiny.
