Chapter 05.1: The Guardian Devil

If they compare Adeline’s face to any amount of money, it may not be worth a single penny. Anyone can see in her eyes how to open her heart in dealing with others, so even if other people mistreat her, she tries to understand why they’re doing it.
But no one can blame her when she has exploded with rage, not trying to tolerate the things that could ruin her life, especially since she’s no longer in the world of garden with butterflies. Adeline has to live in a world full of betrayals, problems, and mistakes with a bit of miracle.
Adeline woke up the next day after the alarm sounded. From what she remembered, she never had an alarm clock. Therefore, where did that loud and annoying sound come from?
She suddenly hears a groan. A man’s morning groan. She gathered her thoughts before realizing she’s not in her apartment. She’s at someone else’s and she didn’t know whose.
Adeline could feel the bed moving and she’s lying to it, although she’s not the one moving. She carefully turned her head on the right side to see who’s sleeping right next to her, and a piercing scream broke the morning silence.
“AHHHHHHHHH!!!” Adeline screamed while her eyes were tightly closed and covering her body with all the blanket she’s keeping to herself.
The man sleeping right next to her was Chris, who apparently got awakened because of the way Adeline screamed. To him, the scream sounded like a siren.
They both looked at each other; Adeline with a frightened face, while Chris with an irritated reaction. She immediately gets off from bed, still bringing the blanket with her.
“Why are you here?! Why am I sleeping next to you?! What did you do to me?!” she asks him continuous questions.
“Hold your horses, Quinn! Just to clear the air between us, okay? I did nothing to you-”
“-then why are we sleeping right next to each other?!” she cut him off from speaking.
“Because this is my bed." Chris taps his bed. “And this place is my apartment.”
Adeline looked around the place and noticed the room was designed differently than hers, confirming she’s at Chris’s place. She stared at him, trying to calm herself down.
“You could at least have a courtesy of lending your bed all to me for the entire night!” she exclaimed.
“Can’t you just be grateful enough and I didn’t let you sleep outside?” he said.
“That’s not the point. My point is I am a woman and you are a man.”
“I don’t care. This is my bed. I will sleep here no matter who I am sleeping with or who’s the person right next to me. Okay?” he insisted.
Adeline grunted. “What am I even doing here in the first place?”
Chris suddenly had a smug look on his face. “Seriously? Are you really sure about asking me that kind of question right now?”
“Well, yes! I demand an answer, Emersyn.” she frowned and exclaimed.
Chris laughed at her with a mock. He gets off the bed and teased Adeline by approaching her with an act of intimacy. It’s also a plus, now that he’s still naked on the upper body and left with his black boxers.
Adeline immediately covered her eyes after seeing something round on the surface of Chris’s front. It was so embarrassing for her and she doesn’t even know what to do.
“Stay away! I will scream again if you-” It cut her off from speaking when Chris held her on her back and pinned her on the wall behind her.
They looked at each other, Chris still intimidating her.
“What is it you were saying again, Quinn?” Chris asked her as he parted the hair that was covering a minor part of her face.
Adeline couldn’t think straight with Chris cornering her like this. It has been a long time for her not to feel it, but her butterflies have finally returned. She couldn’t avoid staring into his eyes, which made her heart pound even more for him.
“I wanted to let you know, Chris…” she said.
Chris’s reaction suddenly changed. He was suddenly expecting something serious coming out of Adeline’s mouth.
“I have been-”
“-you were drunk last night!” Chris immediately avoids her and distanced himself.
Adeline went surprised by what she heard from him. She couldn’t believe it herself.
“I was?” she asked him.
Chris nodded at her. "Yes. I didn’t know what had gotten into you and you were dancing at the bar with different guys. I find it funny though.”
Adeline never thought she would act wild and free, that she could dance with people she didn’t know. Her parents didn't raise her that way, and she didn't know what to say in case her mother found out about it.
Chris noticed the sudden change on his friend’s face and he can feel something is going on with her. She won’t just tell him. He hands her the set of clothes she wore last night, along with a clean bathrobe.
Adeline glanced at him in concern. “What are these for?”
“You should go back to your apartment now. I’m sorry I didn’t wash your clothes. I just don’t want to meddle with your stuff and make you mad at me for doing something generous," he said.
Adeline took what was being reached out to her.
“Why would you be washing my clothes?” she asked him.
“You showered with some glasses of beer at the bar. I don’t know why, but that’s what happened.”
It must be really the worst day yesterday, and Adeline even showered in beers. Great. What a terrible scandal.
Adeline returned to her apartment to get dressed and get to work, even though she was late. But she also thought of not going to work because of what happened yesterday. She laid down on her bed, all eyes up, looking at the ceiling.
She sighed. “What should I do now if I don't have plans to go to work?”
Knock. Knock.
Adeline got up from bed and went out of her bedroom to answer the door. Her eyes widened upon seeing Chris again, who's already wearing a bathrobe. She immediately tried to close the door, but Chris prevented her by grabbing and pulling her left arm out, making it stuck in the door.
“Ouch, it hurts!” she exclaimed.
“I want to talk to you.”
“Let go of me!”
“I will do that if you promise not to close the door in front of my handsome face," Chris stated.
“You’re not handsome!” she yelled.
Chris gasped after getting insulted. “Take that back!”
“Yes. I am taking back my arm-”
“-no! Take back what you said!”
Adeline opened the door before Chris let go of her left arm. They glare at each other as if they are about to attack each other.
“What do you want from me?!” Adeline questioned him, irritated.
Chris sighed. “I would like to invite you to accompany me to my work.”
Adeline crossed her arms, frowning. She didn't know why Chris had to ask her to go with him on his way to work. He’s obviously not a child anymore who will bring a parent on their first day of class.
“Do I look like your mom?” Adeline asked him sarcastically.
“No. Because she’s much more beautiful than you," he said without vain.
Adeline’s mouth gaped at what he said. “You jerk.”
“I have been. Thanks for reminding me.”
Adeline grunted because she was so pissed at Chris’s words. She ignores him and leaves the door open, before walking away, completely leaving. But then, Chris slightly entered the apartment as he reached out and gently grabbed her right hand.
“I’m sorry for being rude to you. I couldn’t help it,” he said in a monotone.
A concerned look can be seen from Adeline’s facial reaction. She stares at him, for which she could tell he’s being sincere this time.
“We may have been on inappropriate terms before we stopped talking to each other during junior high school, but I badly want to talk to you right after seeing each other again. Now is the time, I guess.” Chris was getting shy again. He may be a jerk or a bully, but being a sweetheart is also in his genes.
